Key West Fishing 03-10-16
I had a full day today (Tuesday), guiding two action-filled charters from Key West to the south. We began the first charter at the reef, where each angler nabbed their limit of Yellowtail Snapper (10 apiece). The warm weather has also boosted the water temps, leading to a rise in sport-fish activity. A hungry school of Amberjacks then raided the reef to catch some Yellowtails for themselves. The fishing party caught three of these predators, with the biggest tipping the scales at fifty two lbs. We then journeyed out to the color change in about 160 feet of water. There were plentiful Bonita and smaller Mahi Mahi at the border of the Gulf Stream.
On the second excursion, I set up the kites with some live Blue Runners and it paid off after a three hundred and fifty-plus pound Hammerhead Shark hit the line. On the flat lines, we had two Sailfish hooked at the same time. The larger fish was 7 feet long. They were biting the live Threadfin Herring.
We expect the wind to be coming out of the southeast on Thursday, so we are planning to fish in the Gulf. We'll follow a shrimp boat, which usually picks up some fishy followers overnight, expecting to be rewarded with a load of bycatch in the morning. It is great fun to cast with light tackle into the wake of the shrimper trying to snag some Blackfin Tuna.
We look forward to seeing you in Key West,
Captain Damon Santelli
