Key West Fishing 03-28-16
The last week in key west could not have been better for fishing, specially the offshore fishing charters out in the Atlantic. The weather was warmer than average during this season and thus the fish were extremely active. Plus with the wind's direction coming in from the north, the conditions were ideal for catching top gamefish species, in particular everyone's favorite, the sailfish. Several of our captains lead very successful excursions out to the offshore waters for sailfish. And given this upcoming week's forecast, we expect the conditions to remain just as ideal this week, even with the short 2-day cold front coming in later tonight.
Other big game species caught by our team this week include Wahoo (one of the Wahoo we caught weighed in at 40 pounds!) and seven King Mackerel in one trip (using live bait). In the deep sea shipwrecks, we have seen success with species like Mutton Snapper and Amberjack. Over on the flats, the fishing has been pretty consistent for the past few weeks. The signature trophy catch this week was a 47-pound Kingfish caught out on the reef edge using live bait.
Another thing we have noticed is that tarpon season seems to have started earlier than normal this year. Tarpon is one of the species that can be caught throughout the year, but in the cooler winter months, you typically see a significant dip in the tarpon population, or at least tarpon that are biting. But the majority of January and now the first part of February we have had at least one or two charters that have reported back with tarpon catches.
